Tony Pedemonte’s sculptures sometimes draw comparisons with those of Judith Scott whose works are exhibited nearby. Both artists are known for compositions of wooden structures or found objects wrapped in fiber. Yet Pedemonte had neither met Scott nor seen her work when he shifted from drawing to his current three-dimensional approach at Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland, California. His first sculpture was a crumpled drawing and scraps of cardboard wrapped in thread. He moved on to obsessively cover much larger objects, like the stool and structure displayed here, until almost completely hidden beneath a taut web of exuberant color.

TPe 044, by Tony Pedemonte; 2013. Fiber, mixed materials.

Dimensions in inches, in order of height, width, and depth: 24×12×12

The work is comprised of what appears to be a wooden stool wrapped in many overlapping layers of thick thread in multiple colors. Though the stool’s form is quite apparent, if slightly concealed by the thread, its own surface is entirely hidden except at the bottom of its legs, where a few inches of wood peek out. Over the rest of the work, this base object is covered quite comprehensively; there are no apparent gaps in the cocoon of thread, not even between the stool’s legs. The thread seems to have been applied in layers. Red is the final layer and most apparent among them.

Dimensions in inches, in order of height, width, and depth: 42×32×27

The work is comprised of several large, unknown objects stacked on top of each other and entirely covered in yarn. This yarn presents a layered web appearance, with main colors visible being blue towards the inside, then white, then orange. The work’s overall shape is irregular, and difficult to define. There appears to be wooden furniture legs sticking slightly out at multiple angles throughout the structure.
